What To Expect When You Inspect
Inspect your used mower before removing it from the seller’s location:
When inspecting a used mower, it is important to check the following items to ensure that the mower is in good working condition:
Overall condition: Check the frame and seat to look for obvious defects beyond normal wear and tear that could affect the resale value.
Engine and transmissions: Check for any leaks, smoke, or strange noises. Make sure the engine starts easily and runs smoothly. Start and stop the engine a few times to make sure the key switch, solenoid and starter are in good working order.
Oil and fluid levels: Check the oil and fluid levels to make sure they are at the correct levels and are clean.
Tires: Check the condition of the tires and make sure they are properly inflated.
Battery: While the engine is running, check the condition of the battery and charging system to make sure the battery receives and holds a charge.
Cutting deck: While the motor is off, check the condition of the cutting deck, blades and spindles. While sitting on the seat, turn on the motor and engage the blades to listen to the spindles and blades. They should not be overly noisy and should sound like a swarm of bees if functioning properly.
Electrical: Check all electrical components such as lights, switches, and controls to make sure they are working properly.
Steering and suspension: Check the steering and suspension to make sure they are working properly and that the mower is easy to maneuver.
Service history: Check the service history of the mower to see when it was last serviced and if any repairs were made.
By following this checklist, you can help ensure that you’re getting a mower that is in good working condition and will serve you well.
